Fireworks - Should they be totally banned?

What does everyone else think about fireworks?

Personally I detest the things. I think it’s unfair to elderly people/sleeping babies and nervous animals to continue to let these things be sold willy-nilly to the general public, some of whom, let’s face it, have no consideration for the afore-mentioned ... and happily set these things off at any time of day or night.

So what do we do about these nasty little blasters? smile

Maybe, some kind of licence?

Totally banned? You imply there is already a ban on them? There is already a restraint on when they can be sold which i think is sufficient.

I understand you say some people detest them such as yourself and of course some people do not consider others, however does this not happen in other issues in life? For example loud music.
But now although loud music could be considered a noise disturbance and be dealt with it has to be often and within certain parameters, so surely this is the same as with fireworks?
There is a restraint to when they can be sold and even kept and if someone if actually being a nuisance then you can report it to be dealt with (although i understand the practice and theory are different).

I agree there are some people who will abuse/cause nuisance but that does not mean we should punish everyone else who enjoys them responsibly and sensibly.

Furthermore, consider New Years Eve and Bonfire Night official firework shows…would you see these banned as well?

I was under the impression that several years ago rules were put in place whereby fireworks were only allowed on bonfire night, the Saturday nearest bonfire night, Diwali and New Years Eve.  The rules don’t seem to have done a thing to control fireworks round here, I hear them randomly throughout the year and they can go on all through the night.  Animals are terrified out of their wits, people can’t sleep - just try getting a tiny baby to sleep through all those explosions!

If fireworks were kept strictly to specific nights, then at least we would get the chance to either dose our pets up with sedatives (the fact we even have to is wrong though, surely?) and I suppose people who are really worried by the noise could move out to areas where there’s less noise if they can find such places.

Unfortunately though, I’m afraid that from what I see here where I live (next door to a policeman and next door but one to a retired policeman) rules and laws mean nothing to those idiots who like to drive around throwing lit fireworks at people, other cars and houses.  Yes, this really happens and it’s all well and good phoning the police, but what can they do if they aren’t here at the time it’s actually happening?  It’s terrifying.  And for that reason, I would be more than happy to see fireworks banned apart from properly organised displays on designated nights.

In reply to calling the police that is why i added the bit about theory and practice…as I have lived in some fairly rough areas myself and know exactly what the practical application is.

But the thing is even if it was enforced better that they were only allowed on the designated nights it would not stop these idiots you speak of.

Also, just to repeat my last post that if it was banned apart from organised displays then i think you are taking away a priveldges that responsible people have and that there isnt actually that many ‘stupid’ people as a percentage, and just like it does not cause a nuisance that often either.

Well Andre, I guess you don’t get the same problems where you are as we do round here and it’s not rough here it’s very nice area!  However, as you say, I don’t suppose any amount of legislation will stop idiots from causing a nuisance.  Shame that so many people with pets/old people/nervous people/tiny babies have to suffer for the sake of what others see as entertainment.  I’ll stick to my sparklers again this year wink

< Totally banned? You imply there is already a ban on them? >

They are already banned here in Northern Ireland, Andr, but nobody takes a blind bit of notice. One can apply (and pay for) a licence but nobody bothers because, let’s face it - how many police can there be in so many areas at a time.  And anyway, people can buy fireworks off market stalls and from other disreputable outlets so it’s not practicable to monitor the situation at all.

It’s all very well saying that banning fireworks spoils the pleasure of law-abiding citizens but if they weren’t such a blasted nuisance in the first place there’d be no problem with them!

Ok. Organized displays - fine, I suppose, if you must ... but awaaaaaay way somewhere far enough so’s not to be a nuisance to anyone or anything. But no personal usage at all is what I’ll order when I’m Queen of the country.  wink  Take my two pet chihuahuas f’rinstance - they both huddled in my handbag scared to death of the nasty bangs and refused to come out all night!  Now that’s not right, is it. :(

And May I Just Say. (goodness, I’ve come over all Maggie Thatcher now) .... I’ve spent an absolute FORTUNE over the years buying sedatives, etc, for my beloved pets for Halloween night and they’re still petrified, and they’re indoors - so what about the poor animals stuck outside in back yards?? Some never recover from the shock of firework night and I think on that point alone they should be banned for ever and ever - Amen.

But hey-ho that’s just my opinion, innit - and nobody ever listens to me anyway.  smile

They are in Southern Ireland as well, and trust me it is easy to get hold fo drugs then fireworks in Eire! So obviously theyre doing something right in your eyes!

But pet owners know when fireworks are usually set off, so keep the animals indoors. I do understand the cost of sedatives however.

But clearly they are not “such a blasted nuisance” otherwise people would not buy them, people would not go to displays, and the industry would be dead. Have you ever been to London, Edinburgh, Cardiff, or any capital for new years? Then you will see the masses of people who love fireworks in their masses!

< But clearly they are not such a blasted nuisance >

But they ARE Andr. Why else would they be banned/restricted/regulated at all in the first place if they were all so harmless?  And some people don’t care enough about their little animals to keep them indoors on firework nights, Andr. :(  But that’s a whole nuther subject ....

< otherwise people would not buy them, >

Hmmm ....

And re; sedating pets on firework nights - that would be good if firework nights were restricted to a few dates a year - but they ain’t - they can be going over here sporadically from July right through to New Year.  And sedation doesn’t work most of the time anyway, and why should people be forced to pump harmful drugs into their pets anyway to accommodate thugs chucking bangers around? Huh? Answer me that Mr Andr .... (darling)  wink

(Oh I do hope we’re not going to fall out over this Andr - you’re my favourite poster on here - and my chihuahuas need a nice new Daddy)  ♥♥♥

To the nuisance issue: the restriction/banning elsewhere i would say it because theyre explosives and not necessarily a nuisance per se.
And if people can’t look after their animals they shouldnt have them…but as you say thats a different kettle of fish, and it really is.

Then sedating pets, i can understand your stance as i dont even like pumping myself full of drugs at any time. Also their is a restriction when firework can be let off in this country, obviously that requires people adhering to those rules though and little way to enforce them either.

And dont worry i am sure we wont fall out, im not going to hold it against you, nor am i saying your argument and point of view are not valid, as they are. I am just providing a different point of view and argument to the table.

Imagine how boring this forum would be if everyone agreed! Furthermore, us lawyers would be out of jobs if everyone agreed!

That’s a most agreeable response, Andr. See? I’ll soon have you round to my way of thinking after all ....  smile

In my opinion, they should not be banned because they are only dangerous if not handled responsibly. They also mark a milestone in our countries history and the legacy should be left alone. People in this country need to stop being so protected and scared all the time - what is the point sending people to prison when we are already living in one?

It’s banned in many countries as far as I am aware.
