    LLM Law School

Our Faculty is based within the University's award-winning Sir Tom Cowie Campus. We have almost 3000 students worldwide, which include those in the UK as well as those students studying via distance learning at our overseas centres in Europe, South East Asia, North America, Africa and the Caribbean.

Law at Sunderland continues to grow in terms of both national and international recognition and popularity. In 2007 the National Student Survey ranked the Law Department first for academic support, assessment and feedback. In that same year the Times Higher Education Supplement (THES) declared Sunderland University the best for student experience and this year the Guardian League Tables showed that Sunderland is the best new University in the Country for studying law.

If you want to stand out when applying for legal roles, our programmes are for you. Our Master of Laws programme is designed both for people who have already completed a law degree, and non-graduates with relevant experience and specialist interest. In today’s competitive world, it will ensure your career enhancement.
We offer a wide variety of Masters Programmes that incorporate the research expertise of the department and allow students to specialise in a wide range of contemporary legal subjects at Postgraduate Level.

All Postgraduate courses are taught at the purpose built, award winning Sir Tom Cowie Campus. Equipped with a brand new Law court, the campus helps the student learning experience mimic, more closely, the realities of professional practice.

The campus is complete with a state of the art library and learning resources facilities, which includes comprehensive access to computers, printing, photocopying and inter-library loans.

Sunderland’s Student Union organises events throughout the year in our campus bar. Past events include a performance by the Arctic Monkeys, themed nights such as School Disco and cultural evenings.

The University’s sport centre holds a purpose built sports hall for Badminton, five-a-side football, Basketball, netball, aerobics and yoga. The campus also houses three canteens, all of which offer a diverse range of hot and cold meals, at an affordable price.

Sunderland has a long tradition of combining a practical approach with a strong theoretical underpinning and the development of transferable skills.

Teaching methods include lectures and seminar discussions, role-play and practical exercises. You will acquire powers of analysis and research, and the ability to think critically and solve problems.

You are encouraged to develop as an independent learner, supported by a variety of facilities including the well-equipped library, on-line databases, CD-ROMs, and full Internet access. Assessment techniques vary and will include essays, examinations, report writing and presentations.

Our Faculty has a prime location in the award-winning Sir Tom Cowie Campus, on the bank of the river Wear. This is only a short walk from Sunderland City Centre and the nearest metro line.

The Faculty is surrounded by local history and culture. St.Peter’s Church, originally a monastery, built in 674AD, is opposite the Faculty entrance and has recently been nominated for UNESCO World Heritage Site 2010.

Opposite the Faculty we have St Peter's Church. The church was a monastery, built in 674 AD and has recently been nominated for UNESCO World Heritage Site 2010.

Next door to our Faculty is The National Glass Centre which mixes the very best of contemporary glass art with exhibitions and displays on Sunderland's history of glass making.

A short stroll from the campus is Monkwearmouth Station Museum. With a recent one million pound development, the museum offers a modernised, accessible environment for visitors who wish to explore and learn about the history of transport in Tyne and Wear.

One of the most exciting new developments in Sunderland is `Stadium Park' which is home to the 'Aquatic Centre' that offers a 50 metre swimming pool with a state-of-the-art wellness centre. The facilities are world class and have been submitted for a training base for athletes competing in the 2012 London Olympics. Also in Stadium Park is the magnificent Stadium of Light, home of Sunderland Football Club. Our local football team play at the highest level and attract thousands of fans around the world every week.

Course fees for our LLM programmes currently stand at £3,995 for Home/EU students and £8,750 for International participants. However International students will receive a £1,500 scholarship which would bring the grand total to £7,250.

Sunderland has changed beyond recognition over the past few years and offers everything you would expect from the largest city between Edinburgh and Leeds. Whether you are looking for arts, culture, sport, history or heritage you won't be disappointed.

During your time at university you will meet lots of new people through your course, accommodation or our many clubs and societies. The Students' Union caters for all tastes, whether you are a party animal or a lounge lizard. They organise the extensive Freshers' entertainment programme as well as fulfilling your pub, club and gigging needs throughout the year.

Much of the entertainment is centred around Campus nightclub - based at the Sir Tom Cowie Campus. Totally refurbished for Sept 2008, this American frat-house styled venue is a must for every Sunderland student. With themed nights, celebrity appearances, bands and much more you'll be guaranteed a cracking social life.

Sunderland is also one of the best value places to live in the country, so you will find your money goes further.

The University's Careers and Employability Service offers career planning and job search support to current students and graduates for up to 3 years after completion of their programme of study and provides recruitment services to employers.
