    LLM Law School

Bangor Law School is an international Law School, set in a beautiful, environmentally pristine location, with energetic staff recruited from the world’s top law schools, and exciting programmes designed for the internationally mobile ambitious law student.

Typical LLM seminar sizes range from 10 to 15 students, giving you the opportunity to make a real contribution, as well as have an intimate level of contact with the experts who teach and guide your study, and help you plan the next stage of your career.

This year, Bangor Law School is offering several exciting new Masters programmes and scholarships. As well as our flagship LLM in International Commercial & Business Law, we now offer new LLM programmes in:

  • International Law
  • Public Procurement Law
  • Intellectual Property Law
  • Law & Banking
  • Global Trade Law
  • International Criminal Law / Human Rights
  • Public Law & Devolved Governments

Graduates from these programmes can expect to seek careers in International Organisations, Law Firms, Government, NGOs, Academia or Major Multinational Corporations.

All these programmes will be of interest to both the International student seeking a high quality graduate law masters experience in a prestigious UK University, and to the UK student seeking an international graduate experience.

In order to support our students throughout the course of their studies, both the Law School and the University centrally provides a range of learning resources supported by experienced staff.

Facilities include an extensive Law Library which has benefited from substantial investment and is overseen by a dedicated Law Librarian who provides specialist support and advice to students. It includes printed and electronic sources that reflect current teaching and research within the Law School.

The collection includes Reference, Statutes, Law Reports, Journals, Books and Pamphlets, Official Publications, Newspapers, European Documentation Centre and Online Databases.

These complement the excellent resources offered centrally by the University such as extensive IT, library and archive facilities.  Amongst these is ‘Blackboard’, a virtual learning environment where recordings of lectures, notes, reading materials and many other resources are made available for students to access.

Bangor Law School promotes an environment of learning and research. Our team of experienced and multilingual staff are graduates of many leading universities, and some have been previously employed as professionals within the legal sector in roles such as judge, solicitor and magistrate. This expertise is reflected in the teaching of Masters courses, as well as extensive research activity and projects such as the €3.7 million “Winning in Tendering” Public Procurement Research Project.

Coupled with this rich combination of backgrounds, staff members’ research reflects varied interests and expertise in fields such as EU Law, Corporate Finance Law, Maritime Law, International Law, Commercial Law, Company Law, Administrative Law, Law and Religion, Child and Family Law, and Intellectual Property Law. Developing young professionals through MPhil and PhD research training is central to the school’s mission and the doctoral programme makes an important contribution to the training of future researchers.

Being a key school within the College of Business, Social Sciences and Law enables inter-disciplinary research with banking and financial studies, in which Bangor Business School has been ranked No 1 position in the UK for research in Accounting, Banking and Finance. Regulation and risk, key issues within mainstream Banking and Financial Studies are also an important theme within Law.

Living in Bangor enables students to combine a high-quality educational experience with a wonderful living environment. Bangor is regarded to be amongst the UK's best university locations, situated in North Wales between the mountains of Snowdonia and the Irish Sea and offering some of the finest beaches and most dramatic scenery in the country, as well as an abundance of historical sites of national importance.

Tuition fees for UK and EU postgraduate students is £3,900 while the tuition fee for overseas postgraduate students is £11,300. The cost of living in Bangor is lower than in many other university cities, making Bangor an affordable choice for postgraduate study. It is estimated that students need around £7,000 per year to cover all requirements including accommodation, food, books and clothes. Of course, some students spend more, whilst others live comfortably on a smaller budget. Bangor is rated the second best value University city in the UK, according to a cost-of-living survey published in The Independent.

Much of your social life will revolve around the Students’ Union, which provides services, support, activities and entertainment for students.

The Bangor Students’ Law Society aims to help Law students both academically and socially, achieving an important objective in bridging the gap between what is learnt in lectures and what is needed to succeed in a highly competitive industry.

The Society organises a wide range of activities and events for Bangor Law students in order to provide a more social and productive learning atmosphere. Some of the activities organised include a trip to London to visit the Supreme Court (where students had the opportunity to sit in on a hearing), the House of Commons and the Royal Courts of Justice; and a further visit to Cardiff to offer support to Bangor’s Law students at the Welsh National Moot Court Competition and to enjoy a tour of the National Assembly building.

Additionally, the Society organises an Annual Moot Court Competition, an invaluable opportunity for students to partake in simulated court proceedings. The event has, by now, become an important part of the Law School’s academic calendar.

Bangor Law School offers an array of extra-curricular activities designed to complement studies and to enhance employability.

Through our continuous work in developing contacts with legal practitioners across the UK, we have developed a programme of work placements with a number of law firms and corporations, designed to put students’ learning into context and to equip them with invaluable practical experience of the sort of careers they may wish to pursue after graduating. This programme is complemented by regular careers talks by guest speakers.

The award-winning Bangor Students’ Law Society organises a calendar of events intended to complement what is learnt in lectures and to expand students’ career prospects. These include the annual Moot Court competitions (in which teams of students take part in simulated court proceedings) and the opportunity to obtain the BPP Certificate in Commercial Awareness.
