    GDL Law School

City University London is located at the heart of the legal profession, surrounded by most of the biggest and best firms in the UK. An affiliation with London’s Grays Inn ensures the university and its students are constantly in contact with actual legal professions from the very start.

Confirmed by the Sunday Time’s 2008 university guide, it continues to occupy a leading post on the graduate employment rankings. The University is renowned for its focus on the practical aspects of education and aims to produce highly employable graduates.

With regard to the GDL/CPE, it is the largest university graduate course in the UK and was the 'original', being the first to offer the programme.

The Law Department is located near the main University building, next to the Social Sciences Department on the city campus. This is the main point for correspondence, lectures and tutorials with all activities held either in the main university building or the college building, both located in the centre of campus.

The Law Library is particularly impressive, providing substantial amount of texts for all courses from the LLB through the LLM. Located on the top floor of the University Building, it provides both silent study areas and a place for group discussions.

Even though the University is well-covered with wireless internet, there are several large computer rooms where students can print, photocopy and research via the online resources, Lexisnexis and Westlaw. The library also has a cafe, known as the ‘Hub’, providing a great place to get away from the rigours of revision every now and then.

Considering that the City GDL is the longest running of its kind, it is safe to say programme delivery is now down to a fine art. As with all other GDL providers, City focuses on the seven core subjects; Contract, Tort, Criminal, Constitutional, European, Land and the law of Equity & Trusts.

You will also be required to complete an independent research project in an area of law other than the ones stated above. Given the history and experience of the course, the City GDL is undoubtedly of the highest pedigree.

City University is located in the heart of London and is arguably one of the most exciting university campus’ in the UK. Retaining the zeal that can be felt on any enclosed university campus with the bustling metropolis of the city just outside, it really is a great place to study.

The University is located between King’s Cross, Farringdon and Angel underground stations and is very well connected for buses also. As with the majority of universities located in the city you’ll struggle to find a lot of greenery, however many of London’s most famous parks are just a few minutes away.

Course fees for the City GDL are £6,750 for Home students and £8,150 for overseas students. University accommodation rents can go from £75 to £120 per week, but there are alternative student housing solutions available throughout the city if you are looking for a cheaper option.

Required textbooks cost approximately £25 in the University’s Waterstone’s branch but at the beginning of each academic year students can purchase used handbooks from the year above if you’re looking to save a few pounds.

City Law Society membership is a one-off fee of £10 and allows students to take part in seminars and different kinds of events organized from time to time. Students also join other law groups because of its wider affiliation, such as ELSA London.

There is limited parking space near the university (plus the congestion charge in London), which is why students prefer to come by bike or on foot. Student Oyster cards give a 30% discount on public transport though.

The Student Union organizes a variety of events each week, whether club nights, comedy or movie marathons. The Student Union bar and club is a great place to chill out and has recently been extensively refurbished and expanded.

For those keen to sample London nightlife, the Shoreditch district only a few minutes away from the university. For the same attractions, such as Leicester Square, Covent Garden and Soho, you’re looking at 10 minutes max on the tube.

Those that wish to broaden their intellectual horizons may choose to sign-up for the diverse extra-curricular courses available at City. As part of law studies, students join organizations such as ELSA.

As earlier mentioned, graduate employability for City students is very high, making the Centre for Careers and Skills Development very popular among students. For law students in particular, the Centre organises a Law Fair each year where students have the chance to meet potential employers ranging from Government run organizations to magic circle law firms.

The Centre offers free CV checking and provides a range of courses on how to develop your employment prospects upon graduating. Whether you are looking to become a solicitor, barrister, pursue a different career, learn a language or simply find a job, the Centre of Careers and Skills Development is there to provide any assistance that may be required.
