The small intake of 10 trainees per year in the London office means that trainees are never ‘lost in the crowd’. Trainees can work on complex, top-end, international deals from day one, and for this reason the firm’s policy is that supervisors take the time to explain tasks properly and make sure that trainees understand how their work fits into the wider context.
In London Sidley has approximately 120 lawyers, including 37 partners focusing on corporate; competition; corporate reorganisation and bankruptcy; debt & equity capital markets; debt finance, including structured finance, debt restructuring, and derivatives; employment; financial services regulatory; hedge funds; insurance; IP/IT; litigation; real estate and real estate finance; and tax.
Sidley expects a minimum of AAB at A’level and at least a 2:1 degree (not necessarily in law).
Beyond pure academic ability, it looks for interesting people, who are genuinely interested in the commercial world.
Sidley recruits 10 trainees to join the firm each September. Trainees spend time in at least four different practice groups, with the possibility of a secondment to the Brussels office.
Trainees work for a number of different people on different matters. What a trainees gets out of a seat is dependent on how much they invest in it and their willingness to develop and contribute to their own training.
Sidley offers financial assistance to its future trainee solicitors to take the GDL and the LPC. It pays fees and also provides an annual grant of £7,000.
A first year trainee salary is currently £39,000 increasing to £43,000 during the second year. Upon qualification salaries increase to £72,000.
If you would like to apply please visit www.sidley.com/careers/world/london/trainee to complete an on-line application form.
Applications must be received by 31st July 2011 for training contracts to commence in September 2013.
