Reynolds Porter Chamberlain LLP (RPC) is a forward thinking London-based law firm with a wide-ranging practice, some of the leading lawyers in their fields and great clients in both the UK and overseas.

They offer a depth of knowledge and creativity that few firms can rival and are regularly praised in the leading directories for the quality of their training programmes.

  •

Based in modern offices in the City, they work in an open, collaborative environment designed to bring out the best in their people and to ensure that the service they offer their clients is second to none. They strive to create a working environment in which knowledge is shared and access to Partners is a reality.

The firm has a balanced book of client business, between work for insurance clients and non-insurance clients across a wide range of sectors including publishing and media, retail and construction.

Their insurance division stands alone in fulfilling the specialist needs of the insurance industry and handles some of the largest and most high-profile claims in the market, many of which span several jurisdictions.

RPC’s simple and pragmatic approach is at play in its choice of practice areas and work focus too. The work is broadly classified into two specialist areas: (a) commercial; and (b) insurance.

The firm’s insurance practice is one of the best in the business, proven yet again in 2009 when the firm re-entered Legal Week’s Top 50 Law Firms list on the strength of a sterling performance, at a time when other practice areas have been significantly impacted by the global recession.

The commercial practice is an amalgamation of various corporate/business-related domains and multiple industry sectors. It covers: (i) corporate; (ii) intellectual property; (iii) regulatory and commercial; (iv) media; (v) construction; (vi) employment, benefits, pension; (vii) dispute resolution and litigation (non-insurance); (viii) taxation; and (ix) property.

The big revenue earners for RPC include all insurance and reinsurance related work; litigation; defamation; professional negligence and malpractice; contentious tax claims; and risk management and contentious cases across construction, engineering, property, casualty, retail products, media and publishing industry sectors.

RPC appoint fifteen trainees each year from a law or non-law background.

Although proven academic ability is important (you require a 2.1 degree or above) they also value energy, enthusiasm, business sense, commitment and the ability to communicate and relate well to others.

Recruitment usually takes place in the September, two years before commencement of the training contract. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to one of their assessment days during which they will have the opportunity to meet their existing trainees and partners.

As a trainee you will receive first rate training in a supportive working environment. You will work closely with a partner and will be given real responsibility as soon as you are ready to handle it.

At least six months will be spent in four areas of their practice and they encourage their trainees to express preferences for the areas in which they would like to train.

In addition to the Professional Skills Course they provide a complementary programme of in-house training. When you qualify they hope you will stay with them and they endeavour to place you in the area of law that suits you best.

RPC also run summer vacation schemes each year to enable prospective trainees to spend time with them, getting a feel for the firm’s work and atmosphere.

Twelve students at a time spend two weeks with them and are integrated as closely as possible with the real working life of the firm. You should get a good idea of whether a career at RPC is right for you.

Bursaries are available for the GDL, if applicable, and the LPC. Bursaries comprise of course and examination fees and maintenance grant of up to £6,500.  RPC request that all their trainees complete their LPC at BPP law school.

They feel it is important to offer their employees a creative and competitive benefits package with choice and flexibility. Their full range of benefits can be viewed via their website.
