Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe (Europe) LLP
Orrick is a leading international law firm with more than 1,100 lawyers in 23 offices located throughout North America, Europe and Asia. Orrick has earned a global reputation advising both established and emerging companies, banks and international finance institutions. As you would expect from a firm established in the US there is also a US law capability in the London office.

The firm provides a collegial atmosphere in which talented employees can utilise their potential to the fullest, whilst working for clients with strong reputations and market leadership. There are more than 70 lawyers based in the London office and trainees are provided with comprehensive training, exciting career progression opportunities, and mentoring.
As recognised in the firm’s values, Orrick was formed to help its clients achieve their goals and to solve their problems. The firm’s core values are: excellence and integrity, cooperation and individual respect, and enthusiasm and pursuit of improvement.
The following areas form the core of the London practice: litigation; competition and EU law; banking, capital markets, trade and asset finance; energy and project finance; employment; corporate; intellectual property; real estate; restructuring; and tax.
Candidates applying for training contracts should have secured a minimum of three A-level passes with A or B grades and have obtained or be on track to obtain a 2:1 or higher degree in any discipline. Candidates must also pass the PgDL and LPC in their first attempt.
Candidates must show an aptitude for excellence, hard work, strong ethics and communication skills, as well as the ability to provide quality customer service.
The training programme is overseen by a dedicated training partner and the training curriculum is regularly updated and developed to reflect actual market realities. Trainees spend six months each in four seats, one of which must be a contentious seat.
Regular reviews on performance and future direction in the training contract are provided. The induction programme includes the PSC and is conducted for two weeks at the beginning of the training contract.
There are no vacation placement programmes offered; instead the firm conducts a series of Open Days throughout the year. Participants are introduced to lawyers from all departments, participate in a business exercise, have lunch with partners and associates and meet the firm’s current trainees. Students interested in a training contract at Orrick are encouraged to attend an Open Day to get a better insight into the firm and the London office in particular.
First year trainee solicitors are paid a salary of £38,000 and second year trainees receive £42,500. Newly-qualified (NQ) solicitors start at £65,000 and are eligible to receive a performance-linked bonus.
Fees for the GDL and LPC are covered in full and a maintenance allowance of £7,000, with the firm generally only providing sponsorship where the course or courses are substantially undertaken after their offer is made and accepted. Reasonable travel expenses incurred by Open Day participants will be reimbursed as well as full travel expenses for the second round of interviews and up to £50 for the first round.
Annual benefits include: 25 days’ holiday in addition to public holidays; life assurance; private health insurance; dental care plan; employer pension contributions; season ticket loan; gym membership/subsidy; and childcare vouchers.
Applications for Open Days and training contracts can be accessed online at https://www.apply4law.com/orrick/default.aspx. Training contract applications should be submitted by 29 June 2012 and Open Day applications as per the dates provided by the firm.
The firm offers up to 5 trainee positions each year and those shortlisted undertake a two stage interview process conducted in the London office. The first set of interviews is conducted by the recruitment manager and a partner or senior associate; the second round is conducted by two partners.
