Careers

  • Where will the GLS take me?

    Here, there and everywhere

  • In the early days, trainees will work under supervision before managing their own caseload. With a few years’ experience they may manage a small team of lawyers and support staff and, ultimately perhaps, lead an entire division within a department or head up the entire departmental legal team.

  • During the course of their career, the GLS provides constant training and the chance to work in fields of law which are fascinating.

As you might expect, the salaries on offer are lower than the salaries that in the private sector but they are well above the minimum stipulated by the law society.

Salaries will vary according to department but currently, 1st year legal trainees' salary is in the range of £23,280 to £25,600.

  • "a year after you qualify, your salary range will be in the region of £44,000 - £50,000"

  • Holiday provision for civil servants is also very competitive. You are generally entitled to 25 days annual leave from the minute you join, plus 10½ days public holiday provision (pro rata if you work part-time).

After a certain amount of time (this varies between employing Departments), your annual leave entitlement will normally go up to 30 days' leave – and, work permitting, you are encouraged to take it!

  • In line with the rest of the Civil Service, the Government Legal Service (GLS) also has a positive approach to flexible working.

Crucially though, there is not a long hours culture within the Government Legal Service (GLS) and sensible working hours are encouraged throughout the organisation. Weekend working is virtually unheard off!
