  • This set has a market-beating expertise in employment, education law, human rights, information law and judicial review. The set leads the way in work done in education and information law, is home to a number of acclaimed and respected barristers and has a significant number of tenants who are on various government panels.

Recent cases where the chamber has taken a position are Customs & Excise Commissioners v Barclays Bank plc; Commerzbank AG v Keen; Azmi v Kirklees Metropolitan Council; Secretary of State v Information Commissioner; Ainsworth v Inland Revenue Commissioners; British Airways v Noble, Evans v UK; Suryananda v The Welsh Ministers and Derry City Council v Information Commissioner.

As excellent as the set is in its core areas of expertise, equally outstanding is the orientation and training provided to new pupils and tenants. Of the twelve months in pupillage, pupils spend a solid nine months shadowing different supervisors and members of the chamber, getting exposed to a variety of cases and practice strategies.

The meticulous documentation of performance and double-checking of the results keeps pupils and members of chambers alike aware of the progress and potential of their trainees.

In spite of its star-studded roster and well-deserved reputation, 11 King’s Bench Walk is surprisingly friendly and undoubtedly a convivial place to work in. There is plenty of work available and pupils are judged entirely on merit and individual performance.

No one is in competition with other pupils and their schedules are well-managed by supervisors, with plenty of guidance and support forthcoming from various personnel in chambers. Work hours do not extend usually beyond 6.30 PM and the attractive grant paid out to pupils for the kind of work done makes a pupillage at 11 King’s Bench Walk a sure-fire winner.

The core practice areas of 11KBW are commercial law, education, employment, EU law, human rights, information law, public law, sport and mediation. Commercial law practice covers business protection, agency & distribution, arbitration, bonus & share incentives, partnerships, procurement and PFI.

The education law practice is a niche area where 11 King’s Bench Walk comes out tops among its contemporaries; matters handled encompass all aspects of education, including administration, governance, grievance management, etc. Information law is one of the new practice areas where 11KBW has already gained a significant foothold when compared with other sets in its category.

The work involved deals with all matters of obtaining, using and sharing information, statutory obligations flowing from legislation such as Freedom of Information Act and Data Protection Act.

Minimum educational qualifications should be an upper 2:1 or first class degree with a proven history of excellence in academic and extracurricular activities. The chambers is interested in candidates who are committed to a career at the Bar and possess good presentation and negotiation skills.

You must also be creative, have a sound knowledge of current commercial and legal trends and be confident, assertive and thrive on challenges.

The chamber offers 2 – 3 funded pupillages each year. The year is split into two 3-month and one 6-month sessions with three different pupil supervisors being assigned. During the first term, pupils work exclusively with their respective supervisors, doing research, preparing draft opinions and skeleton arguments, attend Court and client meetings.

In the second term, pupils will take on additional work with other tenants on top of working with the new term supervisor. During the final term which is the second six, pupils take on work from as many tenants as possible. The review system at this juncture is a double-marking system where every piece of work turned in by a pupil is reviewed and marked by two members of chambers.

All feedback collated over the period of nine months is looked at during the discussion for tenancy selection. Pupils who are offered tenancy (usually one each year), will spend the rest of the pupillage term shadowing junior tenants and taking up cases for the Free Representation Unit.

Mini-pupillages at 11 King’s Bench Walk are assessed and run for a period of one week each. During this session, trainees will meet members of chambers and go through the different kinds of work undertaken at chambers.

They are also required to complete one piece of written work and attend a discussion at the end of the week providing feedback on what has been learnt and how their future actions will be affected having spent time working at chambers. The assessment is carried out on the basis of the written assignment and the end-of-week discussion.

The chamber funds an annual maintenance grant to the extent of £40,000, of this up to £10,000 is available for disbursement during the BVC year.

The chamber conducts assessed and un-assessed mini-pupillages every year. Applications for assessed mini-pupillages should be submitted by 1 May, and applications for un-assessed mini-pupillages can be made throughout the year.

Application forms can be downloaded from the chambers’ website under the mini-pupillage section – http://www.11kbw.com/pupillage/mini.php.

Applications for full pupillages should be made through OLPAS; the forms are available at http://www.pupillages.com.
