Coping with exam stress
All About Law. | 21.04.2010I’m stressed. How can I get through all my material in time for my law exams?
Your best tool to meet the challenges of this stressful period is to be armed with excellent study habits.
Here are my top tips:
- The first step is to create the right study environment. Ask yourself a simple question, "Under what conditions do I study the most efficiently and effectively?" For example, are you more effective in the morning or in the evening? Do you like to study alone or with other people? Once you have the answer for you, set yourself up in that environment.
- Once you create the right study environment, use that location only for studying. This way your mind will shift into study mode when you enter that spot.
- Plan your study sessions by writing out specific goals that you want to achieve in that period. (Avoid vague goals such as, "I am going to study all day" as this won’t quantify the amount of work you need to accomplish.)
- Seek advice from other law students who have already gone through the process and find out what worked for them. Speak to students who have taken courses from your professors to understand their exam style and expectations.
- Use existing materials as a starting point, but tweak them and make them your own. (Your own words and phrasing will be more effective than those of another person.)
- Invest the time and effort to do sample test questions. Don’t just skim through them, but actually sit down and work through the samples. Get other people to critique your analysis (e.g. as part of a study group).
Admittedly, none of this is rocket science, but sometimes in the midst of stress we forget the most obvious and basic things!
Good luck!
