  • Unfortunately there are no short cuts

  • I recently had quite a prolonged discussion with a graduate recruiter on the secrets of application success.  The conclusion? There are no none unfortunately. She remarked that she is constantly asked by students, careers advisors and even careers information sites such as ourselves about any secret tips or guides to getting through to the next round.

  • As is to be expected, nothing can replace well crafted answers and a lot of research into the firm you are applying to. Boring isn’t it, but it seems a lot of students apply without considering their answers. So what does this mean?

She remarked that due to the sheer amount of applications they receive, they often need to be ruthless during the process. For example, if you’re not willing to simply proofread your application for spelling mistakes, why would this not be an example of how much attention you would pay to a client’s contract? It’s a fair call to make.

Obviously the issue is time. Students should be expected to spend upwards of ten hours on each application if they are to stand any realistic chance of getting through to the next round.

If you’re interested in six plus firms, well that’s a lot of time on applications. Rubbish isn’t it?! Well unfortunately that’s how the process operates, has operated and will continue to operate. Head down, research and get as much feedback as possible on your answers from the people in the know. Nothing new here but straight from the horses mouth.
