  • If I was to do it all over again

    All About Law. | 14.07.2010

  • A constantly re-occurring theme for me is the ‘if only I had known this then’ issue. Considering so many things can only be truly understood once you have gone through them, it is very difficult to make a reasoned judgement in the beginning. Much can be said of this at pre-uni.

Looking back, I really did have no clue. Seriously. At the time I thought I had everything covered and nicely planned out but the reality of it is I was completely naive to so many things. This was most obvious in my understand of each career and what was involved.

Consider this a brief attempt for me to speak to the 17/18 year old Paul!

  • Lesson one - Do your utmost during A-levels

No matter what you achieve post 18, a huge amount of employers will use these as a filter. Of course there are ways to get round it but think of it as keeping yourself in contention.  If you don’t knuckle down at this stage you’re making it considerably more difficult for yourself.

Lesson two - Actually choose a uni

My university choice was based on a flick through several brochures, a few searches on the UCAS database and one open day visit. I spent almost three years of my life at an institution that in many ways has dictated my future success.  Fairly important decision then you might agree? I must have cumulatively spent 4/5 hours tops on it.

Lesson three - A degree is a benchmark of intelligence (so long as it’s a good one!)

Lawyers can be language, engineering, history, medical, financial or business students. In other words, pretty much every type of student can become a lawyer. Recruiters will look at your degree not based on whether you did law, but if it was credible and whether you performed. If in any way at all your course choice can be viewed as a ‘mickey mouse’ degree, you are probably making things more difficult for yourself.

    Hope that helps!
