    All About Law. | 07.10.2009

  • Confucius once said that “real knowledge is to know the extent of one’s ignorance.” This profound quote marked the beginning of my first class in the course of Sale & Goods and Agency, last year. It was ironic, in that a year on, I decided to enhance my knowledge on the same subject by undertaking a Masters in Commercial Law at Cardiff University.

  •  “What is Lex Mercatoria?” quizzed the Professor’s voice, as I walked in 5 minutes late into the tiny lecture room. Seeing the late arrival, he paused and pointed towards the table with a set of 6 handouts. I quickly picked up each of them and checking whether I hadn’t picked up double copies, silently amazed at the influx of introductory material. Then looking across the sea of heads, who were now all looking at the new source of distraction; I searched for an empty chair.

Oh yes there was one right next to the abandoned computer, oh ok I was going to be at the right back! A great way to start, wasn’t it?! This was my first three hour LLM lecture for International Sales’ Law.  Having done the introductory course (Sale of Goods) the year before, I thought the course would be a breeze. However the array of new terminology and commercial terms used in that lecture set my mind abuzz! This was going to be involving some extra hardcore reading!

The Professor stressed that being a wholly essay-based masters’ programme at Cardiff Law School; it was all about the depth we went into in our research essays and not just the quantity. The reading for next week’s seminar was already a page-long list of several textbooks, cases, journals and reports.

In addition to that the deadline to our first practice 2500 worded essay was less than a month away. This was the overwhelming welcome to the life of a postgraduate Law student. On the positive side, the level of independent research followed by intense group discussion exercises, proved to be some source of comfort. Nevertheless the routine will fix itself soon and I will be looking forward to some of the research in my chosen modules and thus trying to overcome my areas of ignorance, in the pursuit of Confucius’s knowledge!
