  • LLM marks and heading to Edinburgh

    All About Law. | 15.12.2009

  • Baron de Montesquieu once famously said, “You have to study a great deal to learn a little.” This is the feeling that dawned on me, when my International Sales’ Law formative was handed back to me with a ‘56%’ scribbled onto the mark-sheet. I was stunned by the mark and the amount of work that I had put into, especially in the answering of the complex aspects of the problem question.

  • My tutor came upto at the end of the class and said sheepishly, “I wanted to push you to work harder than a LLB student.” I then realized the quantum that was necessary especially in regard to the references element of the essay. In short, we needed to use a library of resources! I do pray that my Intellectual Property mark, which I receive next week to be sufficiently higher as that will be of a great consolation! Good marks are a testimony that your hard work is actually rewarding itself and encourages you to do better for next time.

In the coming week, we shall also be given our essay titles for the two modules of this semester. The essays are 5000 words each and are due in by the third week of January. This means my Christmas will be spent doing lots and lots of reading and even more typing.

As regards to my last weekend, I had the pleasure of going to Edinburgh with the Law Society. It was a very enjoyable experience. Edinburgh is the most historical and cultural city in the whole of the UK.  We received a tour of the Court of Session (civil cases) and the Scottish Parliament. The latter was a magnificent building, bordering very much on the ‘futuresque’ theme!

Entering the building itself, the prize of Scottish devolution was laid before our eyes! However to my amazement and something which I did remark to some of my peers at the end of the tour, was that despite the dissemination of all the positive and modern aspects of the architecture, the tour guide had left out the immense construction costs!  £400 million is not an amount that can be swallowed or ignored!

During the trip, we also met up with the Edinburgh University Law Society and had an amazing time and evening at their beautiful Students’ Union complex!  However some of the highlights of the trip also entailed the petrol-bombing of the club that we were in on one of the nights! Soon after, we evacuated the scenes, lest anything worse was to eventuate. The immensely enjoyable weekend did take its toll, sleep-wise and study-wise, both of which I am now catching up on!

Tomorrow, I am on board for a trip to the Royal Courts of Justice, to marshal ‘Lord Justice Pill’, with some of my friends, one of whom is another fellow blogger (Nick Wolfe) on this website! It will definitely be an invaluable experience and one that I shall share with you all in my next blog!
