  • And the work continues

    All About Law. | 04.11.2009

  •  Mohammed Ali Jinnah (the founder of modern day Pakistan) once coined together a key phrase for his countrymen that would be a guide to for achieving prosperity: “work, work and work.” I too in my last few weeks have been busy with my LLM modules of International Sales Law and Intellectual Property. (The other two, being’ International Banking Law’ and ‘Commercial Property’ are taught in the next semester.)

  • I thought that the quantum of work at the LLB level was sometimes never-ending. But that compared to the preparation which needs to go a standard LLM seminar would be a sheer overstatement!  Like I said earlier, the focus is on depth here and not just the generic information that a student would learn in his studies. Already having 170 pages plus of textbook reading with follow-on articles for one module and a 2500 word essay for the other, due in all next week is a testimony of the insurmountable workload!

However in my case, I am really beginning to enjoy both courses so far, especially International Sales’ Law. Having done an introductory module at the LLB level, it has given me a small edge on already knowing the UK law in this field. However comparing this to the law available on the international level is a whole new thing altogether.

One then starts to acknowledge the problems and the good aspects of international treaties in being non-comprehensive in some areas, but then being a tool of harmonization in international trade. Some of the additional materials that we are being taught on such as on Shipping Law is highly interesting. Having briefly done work experience in the freight forwarding department of my father’s business it has somehow enabled me to reconcile some of the practical knowledge learnt then with the academic side.

Moreover, despite my pre-occupation with my postgraduate studies, I have found the time to enroll in a local gym. A healthy mind is a wealthy one is what my father always says, and I will be happy to follow it through!  Also as I am planning to do my BPTC (Bar Practitioners’ training course) next year, I am also busy looking into BPTC providers and what each has to offer for its prospective students.

Equally so, I am also applying to chambers’ for possible mini-pupillages over my vacation period to accumulate additional work experience in working with advocates. In the end, my hope is that the ‘work, work and work’ adage painted by Jinnah does pay off and help me pave a path for myself!
