Road traffic accidents and charing MASS
All About Law. | 19.11.2009What a couple of weeks in the RTA world. Firstly the Accident Management Association AGM where the world of credit hire companies meet and then the Motor Accident Solicitors Society AGM and conference. Both meetings considered the massive changes that are going to affect the industry next April with the technicalities of the new rules to the impact that the reduced costs will have on referral fees. I think the crux of both meetings in this respect was that there will be changes but until the actual rules are released the impact they will have is still under consideration.
An interesting speaker was Henry Bellingham MP, shadow minister for justice, who talked a lot about legal aid and where the conservatives see themselves in relation to crime work but then dodged whether or not ABS's would still be brought in should the conservatives get into power. He also tried to dodge whether or not the conservatives would increase the £1000 small claims track PI limit saying that they would try and look at everything in a slow and steady approach but, when pushed, finally said no they would not be increasing this limit. Hopefully this will be stuck to!
On a personal note, I have been appointed regional chairman for the Manchester region of MASS and it is something I am both very proud of and extremely nervous of making a good job of it. In my mind MASS is a great organisation and I think it's important to bring firms together and exchange information that ultimately brings about a better deal for road accident victims. What pleases me most is that there are a lot of respected solicitors within the Manchester region and they are still happy for a specialist Legal Exec to chair the meetings rather than having the old stuffy approach of not seeing a Legal Exec as their equal.- Comments
