  • Outside options…

  • During high school I didn’t really have an interest in languages; if I am honest I couldn’t see the point and never really understood the grammar. I figured what was the point in putting in all those hours for a week in France or perhaps a weekend away in Germany. It turns out that was pretty short sighted...

  • In my fourth year at Uni in 2008 I decided to take Spanish as an outside extra. I enjoyed every minute and would love to have started in my first year. I like the challenge of trying to get an idea from inside my head and trying to convey that to another person without using English. When you achieve it, it feels good and you would be surprised how often you can use without being in Spain or S. America.

I would have also loved to have taken an Erasmus year! It can open a bunch of doors too – friendships, travel, relationships, work and great experiences plus it makes you stand out from everyone else.

It depends on what your aspirations are but there is nothing wrong with considering outside options as part of your degree either in lieu of law courses or alongside them. I found one extra course more than manageable.

Although, I would recommend talking through why you would like to take non-law modules with a member of your careers advisory service so you can justify to yourself why you are taking a particular course and take any advice about the perceptions of particular courses.

A firm is be bound to ask you why you selected non-law modules ... they may have doubts as to your commitment in the legal profession. However, if you have logical and sensible reasons for choosing a few outside options that compliment your law degree it can be a good option. It can help you to understand the needs of a firm’s clients better than those that took straight law and making you more employable!
