  • My first week in Sheffield

    All About Law. | 11.10.2009

  • Here, in England as a French exchange student, I am going to spend my third year of Law studies in the University of Sheffield.

  • Since I arrived a couple of weeks ago one of the first things I noticed is that student life is deeply-rooted in the heart of Sheffield. First, you can find the university departments all over the city. Then, the nightlife here is mainly organized around the student community. Maybe I have this feeling because I am a student, but Sheffield is definitely a very lively city!

In addition to that, the Sheffield Students’ Union organizes a lot of events and activities for students. There is here, a real sense of student community, like a kind of student spirit, and I am so glad about it!

My first week here was called the introduction week, a kind of international fresher’s week. It was so intense, with so many people, and so many things to do! We didn’t have time to be bored.

Until now, I have met a lot of students, from every nationality imaginable, but not a lot of Law students.

In fact, while in France, law is a popular subject, since I’ve been in England, every time I have to explain that I am a Law student, people seems to be impressed about it!

More precisely, I am going to study International Law, European Law, Human Rights and Environmental Law.

For the moment non English speaker, I have mixed feelings about this experience. First of all, obviously, I’m excited about this new page of my life. Studying abroad was one of my most important wishes since a few years now! Then I’m really looking forward the beginning of the courses, because I want to discover a new way of Learning Law.

I want to know how this topic is taught in England, what is the English vision of law. Moreover, I want to understand how EU Law is seen here, and curious to know what the English think about European and international relations. So I‘m definitely glad to have such an opportunity in my life.

But the thing is that, on the other hand I’m a little bit worried about the frontier of language.  I just hope not going to be lost because of my English level. It would be such a waste!

    The first week of course

The past week, I attended my first course, a lecture of Company Law. I found it really interesting and as I studied this topic during my second year in France. I was not too lost. I even saw common points between the French company Law and the English one. For example, both systems are based on a similar typology of companies.

Moreover, about the running of  a company seems to be the same in France. For example corporate governance seems to be just the same. In case you don’t know corporate governance means the division of powers between the directors and the shareholders.

In conclusion my first moments here have been much more exciting than what I was expecting… I hope that it’s not just the freshers’week(s) effect.
