Past reflections and future projections
All About Law. | 20.04.2010As the course begins to draw to a close, I look back and see exactly what I have done this year. Luckily I have ten lever arch files to remind me.
As well as all of the work, most of us have fitted in mooting, pro-bono and qualifying sessions around the other things in life (e.g. relationships; well done to those who have managed to keep those going, family; I hope that most people at least still see theirs, and friends; congrats if most of them still like you, but then again you’re going to be a lawyer, they wont like you in the end anyway).
Some people are even fitting in paid work as well, which is definitely to be commended. Unfortunately, as I consider a trip to H&M a treat these days, I can’t say that I have managed this feat.
Last year, when I was thinking about what life in the ‘Big Smoke’ would be like I had envisaged Lauren Conrad-esque moments; running down the street glamorously in a suit and heels screaming about how I simply MUST get this major document to *insert terribly important person/people/nation*. (For those of you who don’t suffer from the acute addictive problem that is watching all/most American dramas, Lauren stars in ‘The Hills’).
In fact at times, there have been these sorts of moments - running to Middle Temple in the rain to get a moot bundle in by 4pm springs to mind – but usually a lot of the time it isn’t like that. Because, unfortunately contrary to the philosophy of the American drama, life isn’t like that and we all know that really.
The reality is that we are all here to get a career; the pupillage hunt is on. The pupillage portal has opened and is ready for us to apply online to all of the Chambers that we favour. Most of us know what area of law we want to go into and indeed a large majority of us have ideal chambers in mind. I know I do.
The other week we were visited by a few current pupils in London who told us what life as a pupil is like. Staring at who I am going to term ‘the lucky few’ actually induced a little bit of panic; these people have training, they are on track with their career and we haven’t even got our exams done yet.
However, it was really helpful to hear from others older, and almost definitely wiser (or perhaps just more cynical) on how for most of them the path to securing pupillage was definitely not without its twists and turns. It appears that we are all in the same boat. But we do wonder whose will be the last to leave.
